General Motors is introducing a new safety system that will use sensor fusion technology. This type of technology will allow the integration of several different safety systems that can alert drivers of upcoming road hazards and assist them in avoiding accidents.
The system will use radar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors and will be featured on the all-new 2013 Cadillac XTS. GM has announced the Driver Assistance Package will include the following safety features:
- Rear Automatic Braking
- Full-Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control
- Intelligent Brake Assist
- Forward Collision Alert
- Safety Alert Seat
- Automatic Collision Preparation
- Lane Departure Warning
- Side Blind Zone Alert
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Adaptive Forward Lighting
- Rear Vision Camera With Dynamic Guidelines
- Head Up Display
GM feels sensor fusion technology is the “building block in the development of semi-autonomous and fully autonomous vehicles” and anticipates that this type of ingenuity could make great strides in the next several years.
